Why is it in the news?
- China has begun deploying the Gande Constellation, its first commercial satellite network designed for 24/7 monitoring of space debris and other objects in orbit.
- The planned constellation will consist of 120 satellites, with full deployment targeted before 2030.
What is the Gande Constellation?
- It is a satellite constellation intended to strengthen space situational awareness and space traffic management.
- The satellites are equipped with AI-assisted onboard computing for routine surveillance, emergency response and rapid tracking with limited ground intervention.
- They will also have orbital transfer capability, enabling closer observation and other in-orbit operations.
What is space debris and why is it a concern?
- Space debris consists of defunct human-made objects and fragments in Earth's orbit that no longer serve a useful function.
- It can include inactive satellites, spent rocket stages and fragments produced by collisions or break-ups in space.
- Even small pieces can pose a serious collision risk because objects in orbit travel at very high velocities.
- Monitoring such objects helps satellites and spacecraft perform collision-avoidance manoeuvres and contributes to safer management of increasingly congested orbital space.
